THE D.O. SOMONTANO
In 1985, Viņas del Vero, together with other wineries in the region, established the Somontano Denomination of Origin which, more than simply a benchmark for quality, represents respect for geographical origins and tradition, as all the grapes used to produce the wines come from the vineyards of the Somontano region. Somontano is a young and dynamic Denomination of Origin, which in just a few years has succeeded in earning itself a fine winemaking reputation. Viņas del Vero exports 30% of its wines to other countries worldwide.
The Somontano district, in the upper Aragon region, is blessed with both great natural riches and a fine historical heritage (Barbastro, Alquezar, Torreciudad, the cave art). Watered by the River Vero and close by the Pyrenees, it offers excellent characteristics for the cultivation of vines. The ondulating countryside, with dark, limy, permeable soil, typical rainfall of 600 mm per year and an average temperature of 12°C, harsh winters and short summers, provide the perfect growing conditions to produce excellent wines. The Romans discovered them almost 20 centuries ago, and lovers of fine wine continue to appreciate them to this day.
The landscape is a blend of the influence of the nearby Pyrenean foothills, home to the Sierra y Caņones de Guara National Park, the Sierra de Salinas uplands, the valleys of the rivers Vero and Cinca, along with a horizon filled with beautiful expanses of vines, olive trees, holm oaks and almond trees.
