Viñas del Vero has reinforced its commitment to protecting the local surroundings by supporting the newly launched VIDAS project designed to support care for the environment whilst promoting sustainability and biodiversity.
The VIDAS project has been created to contribute towards building a better world via meaningful environmental projects that have real significance and impact on protecting the natural world which surrounds the winery and the Somontano wine region.
VIDAS concentrates on small, anonymous and unknown projects run by dedicated individuals; the unsung heroes whose devotion and commitment small but vital, local conservation projects whose stories often go untold.
The name for the project has two meanings: the vine (vid in Spainsh) is the immediately identifiable symbol of wine culture, representing the vines closeness to the earth form which it derives its nutrients and its respectful use of natural resources. Vid, or vine, is also root of the word “vida” (life in Spanish) and is a living organism in itself. The word vida (life) is also about human lives and their capacity to influence their surroundings, for good or for bad. However the most important factor for Viñas del Vero is the positive aspects of how human beings interact with nature for good.
The first project in the VIDAS initiative is dedicated to preserving the local glacier in the Cotiello Mountains that form part of the nearby Pyrenean foothills. Working with, and supporting, local enthusiasts who are dedicated to monitoring and preserving this unique natural phenomenon.
Known as “Following the footsteps of the Glacier” this project aims to unite human footsteps with the development of the glacier. The Cotiella glacier is active and this research project aims to promote its existence to the wider public who are interested in this kind conservation initiative so that they can learn more about the natural world that surrounds them.
VIDAS forms part of the Viñas del Vero’s team’s existing, all-encompassing work to promote sustainability and biodiversity at the winery and in their vineyards. For example, the winery has been a prime mover in the Life REWIND project for the past 5 years; a collaboration between leading Spanish wineries to promote the use of Renewable Energy in the Wine Industry. Similarly, over the past decade, the winery has invested heavily in energy saving equipment such as solar panel parks, water recycling lagoons and water waste treatment plants, as well as electric machinery/vehicles to reduce impact on the environment. In addition Viñas del Vero is increasing its use of natural methods to promote vineyard health (PIWI plants, sexual confusion etc.) to eliminate the use of fungicides throughout the vineyards.Viñas del Vero has reinforced its commitment to protecting the local surroundings by supporting the newly launched VIDAS project designed to support care for the environment whilst promoting sustainability and biodiversity.
