Sustainability in the winery

At Viñas del Vero, our commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment merge with passion for creating unique sensory experiences. Each of our wines is the result of a meticulous process that combines care at every stage of production and delight for the senses.

Nature is abundantly manifest in every corner of our winery and our vineyards, creating a unique environment that is reflected in our wines. Our commitment to sustainability enables us to preserve and respect this winemaking environment where the land, the sun and the climate intertwine in perfect harmony.

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of our winery:

Biodiversity. Retaining local grape varieties.

At Viñas del Vero, we have invested in local varieties such as Parraleta and Moristel hemos apostado por las variedades autóctonas como Parraleta y Moristel, planting them in the lower sited, new vineyards. In the new plantations, these varieties have been given the space they merit, which helps maintain the diversity of the wines produced in Somontano.

Organic production

Our grape growing is governed by strict viticultural standards that respect the environment and we even grow to organic viticulture standards. This translates into organic wines that are sold internationally. Instead of using weed killers, we remove them mechanically; we use sexual confusion techniques instead of insecticides and instead of using fungicides we work on the plants. Also, we use copper and sulphur, together with organic fertilizers, instead of synthetic fertilizers.

Reducing water consumption

At Viñas del Vero, we are aware of how important it is to preserve water as a scarce natural resource.  This is why we apply watering techniques that minimise water consumption such as drip irrigation at night, which is monitored by humidity probesAs to the winery, all the water used in processing the grapes is purified and re-used to irrigate the vineyards close by, meaning there is no wastewater. Also, thanks to the European Life+ Rewind programme, the energy used to purify the water and for irrigation is renewable, generated by photovoltaic arrays installed at the purification plant itself.

Reducing plant health consumables

We are aware that winegrowing consumes considerable amounts of phytosanitary products. At Viñas del Vero, we practise precision viticulture, using information technology and communications techniques to reduce consumables and deliver exact doses according to what the vines need. We are currently the lead company in a research project supported by MINECO (the Ministry of Economy and Trade) and titled Retmavid. The aim of this project was to research variable dosage of phytosanitary products and controlling rootstock diseases. The research project is now finished but Viñas del Vero is still applying the techniques developed while it was underway,

Reducing CO2 emissions.

At Viñas del Vero we are committed to fighting climate change and have worked on several lines of research geared to using hydrogen as fuel for agricultural vehicles such as the one we have at the winery. We are also still involved in hydrogen-related projects.
